Pentecost
If we stop with Easter Sunday we leave the responsibility of the "inbreaking" of God into this broken world at the empty tomb, on the shoulders of the risen Christ who is still on earth. But that is not God's plan. On Ascension Day, (the fortieth day of Easter) the body of Christ leaves this earth and ascends to heaven with a promise to send us help. On Pentecost, the risen Christ baptizes us with fire and makes us the "living body of Christ" to carry on the work he began. It is the day when the responsibility of maintaining the body of Christ is moved from Jesus to us.

The long and important season of the church year known as the Season of Pentecost begins the Sunday after Pentecost (May 27, 2007) and continues until the First Sunday of Advent (December 2, this year). It is a season in which we face the poverty of our imaginations and our inability to accept the gift of the Holy Spirit. That is why the liturgies of this season call us to remember that we are one in the Spirit and that our differences are what enrich us. This is the time to break down walls and stop sorting ourselves into categories that unnecessarily divide us. It is a time to realize that we all are striving to fulfill the same spiritual needs and that this commonness unites us in God.
